First boxes of microgreens delivered to customers in Northern Norway

"This is an important milestone for us. The construction of the facility in Fauske began this spring, and we sowed the seeds for watercress, radish, broccoli, and borage that we are delivering now six days ago. The plants grow quickly, and we are now delivering them to customers such as Bama and Havila Coastal Route," says Marius Johansen, founder and one of the owners of the Grønt fra Laks facilities.

Grønt fra Laks (Green from Salmon) delivered the first 150 boxes of sprouts and herbs from their new growing facility in Fauske. The start-up company uses sludge from salmon farming to grow sprouts, herbs, lettuce, and mushrooms. The green garnish is available in shops and restaurants, from Mo i Rana in the south to Finnmark in the north, all produced in the Fauske facility.

The venture in Fauske also provides more jobs, and the current staff of five employees will be increased to a total of ten. The green adventure started in 2021 when Marius Johnsen pondered how salmon sludge could be used for something useful instead of just being a problem. He presented the idea of using the nutrients from the salmon sludge to grow plants for Kvarøy Fish Farming, and after trial and error with several types of plants and production methods, the breakthrough came. The green facility at Kvarøy started up in July 2021, and now the facility in Fauske is also in full swing.

The operating company is GFL Kvarøy AS in Lurøy, where Grønt fra Laks AS, Maria Olaisen AS, and Stamneset AS are the owners. GFL Kvarøy AS's subsidiary, GFL Fauske AS (Note: previously GFL Bodø AS, name change in progress), got started and established its facility in Fauske this spring. The group as a whole currently has a total of nine full-time employees.

As they have plenty of more news to share, soon, an article will be published that will elaborate on their retail presence in Norway and their future plans. Keep an eye out!
