Shadow Creek High School senior Rahul Vijayan is one of seventeen young environmental activists from across the globe to receive a 2023 International Young Eco-Hero Award.
The award from Action for Nature honors eco-conscious youth ages 8-16 who are taking crucial steps to solve environmental problems. Vijayan won Honorable Mention at this year's competition, a news release announced.
The 16-year-old founded the nonprofit Farm to Tray to improve access to fresh organic produce in Houston area schools by introducing on-site hydroponic farming, a water-based gardening technique using nutrient solution rather than soil.
"I'm truly honored, especially being so invested in sustainability and nature and climate change," Vijayan said. "I always love finding peers who are in the same field as me. I'm even trying to connect with some students there to bring hydroponics to their school and bring some of their projects to mine."
