SunOpta Joins Forces with Seven Sundays to Launch Innovative Upcycled Oat Protein Cereal

SunOpta reveals a landmark partnership with Seven Sundays, a forward-thinking breakfast company renowned for its real-ingredient breakfast products. This new collaboration promotes sustainability and food waste reduction in a powerful, market-ready way.

Seven Sundays have introduced an industry-first – Oat Protein Cereal powered by SunOpta’s OatGold™. OatGold™ is a nutrient-dense, upcycled oat protein powder produced as a byproduct of oat milk manufacturing. With this partnership, Seven Sundays expanded its product line using SunOpta’s upcycled oat protein ingredient. The new product is now available nationwide at major retailers like Whole Foods Market and Sprouts and online on Amazon. It can also be ordered directly from the Seven Sundays website.

The essence of upcycling lies in its zero-waste ethos, aiming to creatively repurpose agricultural byproducts and nutrients from food manufacturing to realize their highest value. Upcycled foods incorporate ingredients that might have otherwise been wasted, using verifiable supply chains, and have a positive environmental impact.

Lauren McNamara, Vice President, and Assistant General Manager of SunOpta, stated, “At SunOpta, sustainability is embedded in our DNA, and we are perpetually seeking sustainable solutions within our operations. Our alliance with a like-minded local company like Seven Sundays to create a nutrient-packed cereal with our upcycled oat protein resonates with our core values and our aspiration to deliver healthy consumer options. In addition, this partnership reduces food waste and promotes a sustainable application for our OatGold oat protein powder.”

The Seven Sundays Oat Protein cereal is offered in four flavors – Simply Honey, Super Fruity, Maple Cinnamon, and Chocolate Sea Salt. Each serving contains 5 grams of upcycled plant-based protein free from artificial and natural high-intensity sweeteners. Instead, it is lightly sweetened with natural sources like dates and organic maple syrup. This new range is also gluten-free and Non-GMO Project Verified.

Hannah Barnstable, Founder of Seven Sundays, expressed her excitement about the partnership. “The residual product from producing oat milk has three times the protein, twice the fiber, and significantly more nutrients than already nutritious whole rolled oats. SunOpta’s OatGold ingredient satisfies a production need for us and presents a delicious and nutritious solution to food waste.”

This partnership represents a significant stride towards sustainability and reducing food waste in the food and beverage industry, signaling an encouraging trend towards more environmentally conscious practices.
