Sustainable food production and consumption have become increasingly important in addressing climate and environmental crises. As a result, innovative approaches to producing food with lower environmental impacts are receiving more attention. Controlled environment agriculture, also known as vertical farming, is one such approach that is gaining popularity. Among these innovations is aeroponic farming, a soilless agriculture method where plants are grown in the air and sprayed with a nutrient solution. However, while the benefits of aeroponic farming are well-known, its environmental impacts have not been fully understood.
Schmidt Rivera et al. (2023) conducted a recent study in the UK to assess the environmental impacts of an aeroponic farm container system. The study analyzed 19 indicators and found that energy requirements were the driving factor for all the impacts. For instance, the climate change impact was estimated at 1.52 kg CO2eq per 1 kg of microgreens (pea shoots) using the 2021 UK grid. However, the study also found that renewable-powered systems could significantly reduce environmental impacts by up to 80%. This makes the aeroponic farm container system competitive with conventional agricultural systems.
The study’s results suggest that aeroponic farming can offer lower-impact food than equivalent imports to the UK while improving food security regarding availability, stability, and access to food. However, affordability issues need to be assessed in future work. Nevertheless, this innovative food production approach could help reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with food production and improve food security, making it a promising solution to address the current climate and environmental crisis. As the world grapples with climate change’s consequences, innovations such as aeroponic farming offer hope for a more sustainable future.
