HPNow System Boosts South African Strawberry Nursery’s Plant Health

HPNow

Professional Horticultural Consulting, a strawberry nursery and production facility in South Africa, faced a significant challenge with Phytophthora infections in their water supply, which affected the quality of their plants and led to substandard plants being supplied to growers. To combat this problem, the company installed an HPNow system that generates Peroxide UltraPure™ through a patented electrochemical process. As a result, peroxide UltraPure™ has helped protect plants from water-borne pathogens, such as Pythium and Phytophthora, improving plant health.

The installation of the HPNow system has had a threefold effect on the facility. Firstly, it has protected plants from water-borne pathogens, which has reduced plant mortality. Secondly, it has made irrigation more uniform and eliminated Botrytis outbreaks from the facility. Finally, the increased dissolved oxygen content in irrigation water has resulted in a more robust root system and improved plant health. As a result, the company has reported lower plant mortality than the industrial peroxide used before, with 1.5 million plants saved.

The use of Peroxide UltraPure™ has not only helped combat the problem of Phytophthora infections but has also eliminated the occupational hazards of dealing with high-concentration bulk peroxide. In addition, it is highly sustainable and made directly on-site from only water and electricity without chemical inputs. The success of this system shows the potential for sustainable solutions to be implemented in agriculture, which can lead to improved plant health, higher yields, and a safer working environment.
