UK: Meet the volunteers bringing iconic City Farm back to life

Paul Cotterill, founder of City Farm (Stoke-on-Trent), was pleased with the turnout from volunteers and is confident the attraction will be open by Easter.

The farm is so hidden away I did not know it existed. It has been abandoned.

“I thought nobody would turn up because of the rain. I got a couple of emails from people saying they were not coming because of the weather. But when we got here people started to arrive.

“It is a big site. There is a lot of work to do. I am positive and very confident that we will get it done to a high standard. We are planning to open by Easter, especially with the progress we have made this weekend.”

Volunteers enjoyed their first session revamping the site which will house a range of animals, including a horse, sheep, goats, pigs, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, bees, chickens, and an aviary as well as an allotment and an area for growing pumpkins. And there will be ducks as the site has a pond.

Karen Morgan, aged 52, of Bucknall, said: “I grew up around here. This was my playground when I was little. I just want to give something back, to see it how it was when I was little.
