City Shamba is an urban agricultural business that builds city gardens appropriate for small spaces. Greg has set up a model farm in Kayole where urban residents, schools, youth and women’s groups can visit and learn how to practice urban farming. Community members can buy produce from City Shamba and get the training needed to begin their own urban agriculture ventures.

Urban agriculture is the future of food production for densely populated communities. It represents the new agrarian revolution and is growing very rapidly. It is a global phenomenon, as cities incorporate urban gardens into home and building designs. It is an important component of the battle against food insecurity and environmental degradation. City Shamba is part of this movement, creating capacity through training while designing innovative, regenerative and space-conscious urban gardens.

City Shamba has the potential to expand and enter new markets, especially in African cities where infrastructure is similar to Nairobi. Through different agricultural technologies such as hydroponics, aquaponics and aeroponic farms, City Shamba can help bring new sources of food production to cities. Over the next five years, they plan to establish three additional urban agriculture resource and information centres in Nairobi, as well as the first mega aeroponic and aquaponic farms in Nairobi. They will explore expanding to other cities in Kenya, such as Mombasa and Kisumu. The investment for the growth would include capital for land leases, new hires and equipment, such as trucks
