“It’s unique for them, too, growing up in the suburbs,” he said. “They run around and pick corn and strawberries and mess around in the woods, and it’s been a lot of fun for them.”

He and Korty bought 27 acres of tillable and wooded land along the west side of U.S. 52 and south of Ind. 47 in 2020. They cut down some trees to make way for their barn at the edge of the woods, built a pond, and planted an orchard at the front of the property.

The barn features a loft and porches that run the distance of two sides and where the sun can be observed rising and setting over the pond.

“You wouldn’t think land so close to the highway could be as beautiful as it is,” Bass said. “We hope people will come hang out and relax awhile by the pond and watch the birds, not just grab a pumpkin and go,” Bass said.

Ironwood Farms’ grand opening is 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and they will open the same hours on weekends through October.

There will be a nominal admission fee this weekend, and visitors will find jellies made from produce grown on site, plus produce grown there, including peppers, tomatoes, pumpkins, pie pumpkins, gourds, popcorn and Indian corn.
