“How To Make Urban Farming Economically Viable” at the International Horticultural Congress

August 18, from 6pm to 7.30pm: Financial enablers and barriers for successful business models of urban farming

FAO and EBRD team is continuing and expanding the global discussion on key challenges and opportunities for commercial urban farming. After four successful and well attended E-dialogues, with over 500 participants, this time we will host the workshop “HOW TO MAKE URBAN FARMING ECONOMICALLY VIABLE” at the International Horticultural Congress – IHC 2022. The workshop aims at discussing the different business models adopted by urban farming players to establish economically viable urban farms in their cities.

If you are already among 2,500 registered participants, we would like to invite you and to welcome you at our Workshop “How to Make Urban Farming Economically Viable” that will be held on the fifth day of the Congress, on August 18, from 6pm to 7.30pm in Grand Angle Room B of the Congress Center.

If you cannot attend in person – no worries! We will make sure to share presentations, a position paper and the video recording of the event, via e-mail and LinkedIn.

The workshop targets urban farming entrepreneurs, suppliers of technology, investors, public institutions, developers as well as researchers. The audience will be invited to share their experiences with respect to financial barriers and enablers.

The workshop is organized in the context of the FAO/EBRD e-dialogues on Urban Agriculture, with the following agenda:
Introductory talk: Economic opportunities for urban farming (Vicente Balseca Hernandez, 30 min including Q&A)
Round table
The round table will discuss the different business models and role, challenges and opportunities of different financing options including:
Investment funds and banks;
National and international funding schemes
Crowdfunding;
Offtake agreements with food processors and retailers.
