The farm of the future is closer than you think – and the EU is, too!

Excerpt:

That’s what 118 primary school pupils from Uusimaa, Finland, experienced when they visited the “Urban Farm Lab” in their region. During May 2022, the children took a unique look behind the scenes of this research facility. From growing mushrooms to tasting sprouts: the visits were full of adventures and insights.

The Urban Farm Lab experiments with new, participatory and sustainable ways of urban farming – notably via the EU-supported “CircularHoodFood” project.

Thanks to the “EU in my school” initiative, pupils now got to know this innovative research, and learnt how food can be produced in their city.

Under the “EU in my school” initiative, together with partner Regions, EU-funded projects, volunteering schools and local interlocutors, we co-create memorable experiences whereby school pupils aged 3-19 years can explore Europe in direct connection with their local reality. Field trips, inspiring encounters, games, creative contests… #EUinmyschool revolves around activities that are both fun and educational.

Each #EUinmyschool journey starts with an activity on the ground, linked to tangible EU-funded achievements nearby (visits to heritage sites, bike tours, treasure hunts in nature reserves, etc.) Then comes the time to make the most of the experience, using creative means of expression (written stories, painting, drawing, photo, or video).

The final step involves proudly sharing with peers and families, as part of exhibitions, schools events or friendly contests.
