Canada: ‘Botanical Literacy’ by Catherine Shapiro

Catherine was City Farmer’s first head gardener in 1982

Exhibition Opening Reception: Open to everyone on Sunday, April 3 from 1.00pm – 3.00 pm

Catherine’s upcoming exhibition, Botanical Literacy at VanDusen Library’s Roberta Mickelson Gallery is a cross section of paintings from her Amaranth project, images of gardens recalled from her childhood, and examples of her experiments in painting and printing on fabric with indigo, a legume that was one of the original sources of blue dye. Indigo exemplifies Catherine’s continued work in making environmental pieces using the plants she has foraged, grown and processed.

In 2021, Catherine, gave a Speaker Series Presentation for VanDusen Botanical Garden’s Yosef Wosk Library and Resource Centre about her lifelong experiences as an artist, gardener and researcher. This talk introduced her project entitled Amaranth: Ceremony and Taboo, which encapsulated her lifelong interest in researching and illustrating the ways in which women developed horticulture.
