WASHINGTON, D. C. — Carl Wallace’s urban agriculture journey began more than a half century ago in his grandmother’s back yard near Kinsman Road in Cleveland. Her name was Julia Corrine Green but everyone called her “Ma Green.” Appropriately enough, she grew greens there, as well as string beans, tomatoes and onions. Wallace helped her pick them.

Earlier this month, Wallace was one of of 12 people selected out of hundreds of applicants from across the country by U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to serve on a new advisory committee on urban agriculture. The group includes agricultural producers, and representatives from higher education, extension programs, non-profits, business and economic development, supply chains and financing. The committee’s job is to give Vilsack input on policy development and help identify barriers as the agriculture department promotes urban farming and the opportunities it provides in cities across the country.
