UK: ‘Swarm’ fear at Allotment over 20,000 bees prompts health and safety ‘squabble’

“Certainly, Cllr Frampton in the past has had concerns and other allotment holders have had concerns down there. Now, I love to see bees on an allotment but as landowners we have a liability to the allotment holders that they are not stung or inconvenienced.

“It’s all about protecting people that are current allotment holders and engaging fairly with them rather than someone coming in making changes that might impinge on the health and safety of them.

“And in terms of risk assessments, in terms of beekeeping, beekeeping is classed as livestock. And I believe under the current tenancy agreement of the allotments, any new activities, other than normal allotment activities, should come through the council and have the full ratification and permission of the council first.

“These things patently haven’t gone through the council. You say that we haven’t asked for the risk assessment. It’s not for the council to ask you for the risk assessments once they find out what’s going on.”
