UK: Urban Food Production Toolkit

As well as the more obvious Orchards, Hedgerows and Rooftops which you might think of when it comes to producing food in a city, the 37 different cards

This new and unique product has been developed by Rachel Hammond, founder of Incredible Edible Oxford (now run as edge), a design and education non-profit organisation, as part of her continuing professional development on her Urban Design Masters at Oxford Brookes.

As well as the more obvious Orchards, Hedgerows and Rooftops which you might think of when it comes to producing food in a city, the 37 different cards also feature lesser-known systems such as Forest Gardens and Aquaponics.

The pack includes supporting systems e.g., Training, Local Enterprise and Routes to Market, as well as practical suggestions such as a Community Kitchen to process crops, and systems which will enhance or support food production, such as Compost & Training.

Unlike any other Toolkit researched by the creator, as well as detailed descriptions and yields of each system, Social, Economic and Environmental benefits are detailed, enabling the user to choose systems for high yield, low maintenance, job creation, biodiversity and many other priority areas.

Rachel Hammond says: “I am excited and proud to release this product widely, having spent the last ten years building my experience in designing and teaching about urban food production. Learning how to produce our own food is a vital part of a successful future society”. Rachel will be running regular CPD sessions on the toolkit from November and can present a CPD session in the workplace to suit user needs.
