Tomato Research: Exploring the Impact of Light Source and Spectra on Production

June 30, 2021 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 pm CDT

In this virtual session, global tomato experts from Fluence and Wageningen University & Research (WUR) will discuss the evolution of supplemental lighting in modern greenhouse high-wire crop production. The presentation will highlight two crucial experiments— conducted in collaboration with Wageningen University Research in the Netherlands—that improve our collective understanding of light and its impact on tomato production.

First, Fluence’s Dr. Dave Hawley will present the findings of the high-pressure sodium (HPS) and white light LED on two cultivars of tomatoes. Then, Fluence’s Dr. Haris Ouzounis will present the latest research on four different LED spectra treatments on two tomato varieties.

To conclude, our team will present a customer case study highlighting Leamington, Ontario’s very own Great Northern Hydroponics’ success since transitioning from HPS to LED broad-spectrum lighting in their tomato greenhouse.

The research will present data on the impact of plant development and yield under different spectra ranging from HPS to narrow-band and broad-band light. Learn how to choose the right light spectra to meet your tomato cultivation goals.
