Now the Camphill Village Trust, a national charity that supports adults with autism, learning and other disabilities, has submitted a planning application.

The plans include a social garden and community hub, which will transform the piece of land at the corner of Stockton Street and Commercial Street.

Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston discussed the project with the Trust as he wanted to create a “green heart” to a new development.

The 1.9 acre farm, which is part of the authority’s Middlehaven “digital city” vision, will be given to the Camphill Village Trust in a 30-year lease subject to planning permission being granted.

The Trust was founded in 1955, with 2020 marking its 65th anniversary, and they currently have 10 services and communities across England, housing over 400 adults with learning disabilities, as well as providing jobs for over 550 staff.

The charity currently supports over 165 people on their social farms and almost 600 through their day and residential placements.
