Hong Kong: Kam Pok Farm

Farmer Chow, in his 80s.

I am a weekend volunteer in a local farm for 3 years and witness the blossom in the agricultural landscape in Hong Kong. I have written an English short article to introduce my volunteer work in the urban farm, Kam Pok Farm.

In February 2017, Farmer Chow, in his 80s, suddenly lost his business partner who used to transport his lettuce to the wholesale market. Being illiterate and isolated from the market, he was desperate and could only cry for help at the rim of his farmland. Fortunately, residents in nearby community volunteered to spread the news. People from near and far flushed in and bought 1000 kg of lettuce. Since then, a volunteer group was formed to maintain online promotion for Farmer Chow with an aim to sustain the farmland which is now known as Kam Pok Farm in Facebook and Instagram.

The volunteer group aims at:

Support Farmer Chow in his choice to continue his farming practice
Maintain the farmland for agricultural purpose
Produce fresh agricultural products for the community
Promote the importance of farmland in urban city

For the past years, we have organized educational tours for families and schools during harvest, charity action to donate lettuce to the deprived elderly, door to door direct sales and seasonal open market to promote farm products. The Farm caught much media attention and people from different districts of the territory come to visit and experience the harvest by their own hands.
