Canada: Market garden urban farmer pushes back against city orders

Since Fogarty’s Market Garden is an urban farm, most of the work is done by hand and doesn’t involve loud noise or heavy pollution. Fogarty says about once a year, they’ll use large machines for projects such as a dump truck to transport fertilizer and soil.

On top of that, with Fogarty’s Market Garden being a one-person operation, Fogarty says he doesn’t grow every single type of crop. Instead, his focus is only on vegetables including lettuce and root vegetables.

“That’s really what we’re focusing on, is growing high-value, quick-growing crops,” he says.

Fogarty says most major cities in Canada already have a policy in place to allow urban farming, including Vancouver where he lived for 10 years.

In 2016, Vancouver’s city council passed a policy which allows two types of urban farms.
