By 2050, Australian households could see urban farms in their backyards, if one Queensland woman has her way.

Founder of Our Food System, Kylie Newberry, wants to see a network of farms and market gardens spread across private and public land throughout the suburbs.

Starting in Brisbane, Ms Newberry hopes to brand the river city Brisbane Food City (BFC) come 2050.

The group has applied for a global Food System Vision Prize, spearheaded by The Rockefeller Foundation, which would see the group receive $US200,000 to roll out their plan.

“Out of 1,300 [entrants] we were shortlisted down to 79 and we refined our application so we’re in the running,” Ms Newberry told ABC Radio Brisbane.
