Lithuania: Urban gardening is becoming popular in Vilnius

Five years ago, a community garden appeared in Pilaite, next to the Beepart creative workshop. The vegetable garden located on Vyd?nas Street initially had 6 beds, later expanded and currently has 33 beds, which are maintained by community members.

“In the beginning, all the beds were shared. This concept was not very acceptable, everyone wanted a separate bed. However, when the community was formed, they got to know each other, and shared beds started to become popular. We grew up,” said architect Laura Petrushk?, one of the founders of this garden. “Idej? lysv?” is growing successfully so far, as another vegetable garden will be established this year in Verkiai – at the former stables of the Verkiai manor.

Vilnius city municipalities this idea was selected from the other 15 in the competition for the support of community activities of non-governmental organizations and received funding. There will be 8 raised beds, water access will be provided, and boxes for storing tools will be installed in Verkii.

“As soon as we announced the news about the community garden being created on social networks, there were more people who wanted to garden than we had space for. On May 1st, we are already inviting you to the first taluka”, L. Petrushk?, the initiator of the city’s horticulture, was happy.
