Canadian Farmers Extend Sustainability Efforts Beyond Earth Day

Canadian farmers and the agricultural industry emphasize continuous environmental stewardship, extending well beyond Earth Day.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Year-Round Sustainability: Canadian farmers and the agricultural industry emphasize continuous environmental stewardship, extending well beyond Earth Day.
  2. Program Expansion: Cleanfarms has expanded its recycling and disposal programs to include a wider array of agricultural products.
  3. Effective Recovery: Notable recovery rates in recycling programs highlight the success of these sustainability initiatives.
  4. Introduction of New Programs: New recycling programs have been introduced for a variety of agricultural products in 2023.
  5. Ongoing Development: Cleanfarms is actively exploring new pilot projects to further enhance agricultural waste management.

Sustained Environmental Efforts by Canadian Farmers

While Earth Day draws global attention to environmental preservation, Canadian farmers demonstrate their commitment to sustainability throughout the year through comprehensive recycling and safe disposal practices. These efforts are supported by Cleanfarms’ agricultural waste management programs, which are integral to the daily operations of many Canadian farmers.

Expansion of Recycling and Disposal Programs

Cleanfarms, known as AgriRÉCUP in Quebec, has broadened its scope in 2023 by operating four permanent and two pilot collection programs. These programs now encompass various agricultural plastics and packaging, including new categories such as maple syrup tubing and animal bedding bags.

Executive Director of Cleanfarms, Barry Friesen expressed his enthusiasm about the expansions, stating: “We’re thrilled to have seen so much expansion in our programs last year. Earth Day prompts us to recognize the importance of continuous work done in partnership with farmers, first sellers, ag retailers, and municipalities across the country to keep agricultural waste out of landfills and move towards a circular economy.”

High Recovery Rates in Core Programs

As Earth Day coincides with the relaunch of their plastic container recycling program, Cleanfarms aims to bolster its network, which will soon include over 1,500 collection sites across Canada. These sites will recycle empty pesticide and fertilizer containers along with other agricultural plastics, with a notable recovery rate of 77% for containers 23 liters and smaller.

“The plastics collected are recycled into new products, many of which are utilized directly on farms, enhancing the sustainability of agricultural practices,” Friesen added.

Future Directions and New Initiatives

The expansion isn’t just limited to traditional recycling programs. New initiatives have also been rolled out, including the recycling of grain bags and baler twine, primarily in the Prairie provinces, which are now being adapted to include a wider range of recyclable materials.

Cleanfarms is continually assessing how to evolve their programs through nationwide pilot projects, reflecting a proactive approach to environmental management. Friesen elaborated on future prospects: “We’re excited about the growth that will stem from this year as we continue our collaborations at all levels of the Canadian ag sector. These partnerships are crucial for operating and developing new programs that support our zero waste vision.”
