In a significant move to support the local economy and community in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Nespresso has announced an investment of $20 million dedicated to coffee purchases, price premiums, and technical assistance by 2026. This initiative is part of the broader effort to raise an additional $20 million to aid the coffee-growing communities in Kivu. This investment marks a pivotal step in the Nespresso Reviving Origins program, established to restore coffee agriculture in regions where it has been jeopardized.

Historical Context

In the 1980s, coffee was a crucial export for the DRC, renowned globally for its quality. However, the industry suffered a steep decline in the early 2000s due to years of instability that ravaged the sector. Since introducing the Nespresso Reviving Origins program in the DRC in 2020, there has been a renewed focus on producing exquisite coffees from the Lake Kivu region, an area once flourishing with coffee farming but devastated by decades of political and economic turmoil.

A Unified Effort

Despite recent challenges, Guillaume Le Cunff, CEO of Nespresso, highlighted the potential of Kivu to become one of the world’s premier coffee regions. “Through our Reviving Origins program, we work closely with Congolese farmers, and we have joined forces with partners including Eastern Congo Initiative (ECI)/ASILI, TechnoServe, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), The Global Environment Facility (GEF), Clarmondial, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and Virunga Coffee to restore and revitalize Kivu as a leading source of high-quality, exceptional Arabica coffee,” said Le Cunff.

Impact and Future Directions

This renewed commitment from Nespresso is expected to bring transformative change to the region. “Nespresso’s deep commitment to Kivu is creating lasting change in communities across the region,” commented TechnoServe CEO William Warshauer. The Reviving Origins program aims to revitalize the coffee sector and enhance community resilience through access to healthcare and clean water, exemplified by the efforts of ECI in building large health centers and water systems in Minova.

Sustainability and Empowerment

Nespresso’s AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program serves as the foundation for these efforts, promoting regenerative practices and biodiversity while also focusing on gender equality. The program has initiated various actions to reduce gender disparities and empower women within the coffee farming community, including the recruitment of female agronomists and providing training on financial literacy and leadership.

Technological Advancements

In collaboration with an impact digital startup, Nespresso is pioneering a platform for coffee verification and traceability, ensuring that farmers are fairly compensated. This technological innovation underlines Nespresso’s commitment to transparency and sustainability in the coffee supply chain.
