Bridging the Gap Between Agriculture and Technology
Dimitra, a leader in blockchain-based agricultural technology, in collaboration with the Peruvian farming cooperative CACI Satinaki, has announced the successful certification of the first coffee shipment compliant with the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). This achievement is noted for its comprehensive use of satellite analysis, artificial intelligence, blockchain, and mobile technology, ensuring a full traceability record from the production to the final product.
Navigating New Regulatory Landscapes
The introduction of the EUDR, which restricts the sale of products linked to deforestation, such as coffee, poses a substantial challenge to producers, especially those operating on a smaller scale. These regulations require that all agricultural products entering the EU market not contribute to deforestation.
Jon Trask, CEO of Dimitra, commented on the significance of this development, stating, “The implementation of the EUDR at the end of this year is a truly seismic moment. The regulatory change’s impact will be felt across the supply chain…In our collaboration with CACI Satinaki to certify an EUDR-compliant shipment of coffee, Dimitra has shown that we have the technological solutions to assist farmers at this uncertain time.”
Addressing the Needs of Smallholder Farmers
With many smallholder farmers yet to meet the mapping requirements set by the EUDR, Dimitra’s technology offers a potential solution for compliance, especially in countries where the coffee value chain is dominated by these smaller producers who are critical to the industry yet face significant barriers.
Michael Scherff, farmer, and CACI Satinaki Export Director, acknowledged Dimitra’s approach: “We are very satisfied with Dimitra’s capability to be present in Peru and communicate with us…We also see that Dimitra demonstrates a deep understanding of the difficulties in the sector…For us, this was the basis for the fast advancement of preparing the compliance of EUDR.”
