OASIS® Grower Solutions Latest News: Releases Carbon Footprint Assessment for OASIS® AeroMax™ Substrate

Oasis Grower Solutions announces the results of a carbon footprint assessment for its OASIS® AeroMax™ engineered foam substrate.

Key Insights:

  • Oasis Grower Solutions, a division of Smithers-Oasis, announces the results of a comprehensive carbon footprint assessment for its OASIS® AeroMax™ engineered foam substrate.
  • The assessment, led by Dr. Vijay Rapaka, aimed to evaluate the sustainability of the substrate, emphasizing the importance of sustainability in controlled-environment agriculture (CEA).
  • Conducted by U.K.-based Carbon Footprint, Ltd., the study compared the carbon footprint of OASIS® AeroMax™ to traditional peat products, revealing significantly lower emissions for the AeroMax™ substrate.

Innovative Approach to Sustainable Growing Media

Oasis Grower Solutions (Profile) has taken a significant step forward in sustainable agriculture with the release of a carbon footprint assessment for its OASIS® AeroMax™ engineered foam substrate. Introduced in 2021 as a pioneering product in the company’s next-generation OASIS® AeroFamily Substrates, AeroMax™ has set a new benchmark in the industry’s move towards more environmentally friendly growing solutions.

Comprehensive Assessment Reveals Lower Emissions

The study assessed the Cradle-to-Grave carbon footprint of OASIS® AeroMax™, including extraction, processing, transport of raw materials, manufacture, packaging, distribution, usage, and disposal. The results demonstrated that OASIS® AeroMax™ produces 6.40 grams of CO2 equivalent emissions per Functional Unit (FU), significantly lower than traditional peat-based products. Specifically, Pressed Peat exhibited emissions over 40 times higher, and Gravity Filled Loose Plugs were found to be 12.5 times higher in emissions than the AeroMax™ plug.

Dr. Vijay Rapaka, Director of Global Grower Operations and Research at Oasis Grower Solutions, commented on the findings, “Sustainability is very important to us at Oasis Grower Solutions and Smithers-Oasis. We understand how important it is to our customers, too… CEA is built on sustainability, and we want to do our part.” He highlighted the commitment to continuously seek ways to further reduce the carbon footprint of their products.

A New Era for Engineered Growing Media

The carbon footprint assessment conducted by Carbon Footprint, Ltd. provides a clear indication of the environmental benefits offered by the OASIS® AeroMax™ substrate. With raw materials accounting for more than 70% of the total emissions, the study serves as a foundation for ongoing improvement and innovation in sustainable growing media solutions.

The substantial difference in CO2 equivalent emissions underscores the importance of transitioning to more sustainable substrates within the agricultural industry, particularly as it moves toward precision hydroponics and controlled-environment agriculture. Dr. Rapaka’s emphasis on using the assessment as a starting point for further research and development reflects Oasis Grower Solutions’ dedication to environmental stewardship and innovation.

Commitment to Sustainability and Future Development

Oasis Grower Solutions’ initiative to assess and disclose the carbon footprint of its OASIS® AeroMax™ substrate represents a significant contribution to the sustainable agriculture movement. By offering a product with a markedly lower carbon footprint compared to traditional peat products, the company is not only providing a viable alternative for growers but also leading the way in reducing the environmental impact of agricultural practices. Dr. Rapaka’s promise to continue efforts in lowering carbon emissions and guiding future product development highlights the company’s long-term commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
