Construction is underway on a new high-tech indoor farming facility in Macon that will serve as a hub for the company’s southeast operations. BrightFarms grows several varieties of lettuce with the goal of getting fresh produce to consumers as quickly as possible.
The company uses hydroponic farming methods that, instead of depending on soil and rain outside, use water-based nutrients to grow its lettuce varieties inside.
“So here we’re going to be growing leafy greens. So leafy greens think about mostly lettuce, red lettuce, green lettuce, you know, stuff like beets, romaine, butter [lettuce], etc.,” said CEO John Schaefer.
BrightFarms estimates when the plant opens, it will bring 250 high-paying jobs to the area. Macon-Bibb Mayor Lester Miller said the company’s investment will benefit the entire region.
“It’s not going to help Macon-Bibb County; it’s going to help all the surrounding areas, including Warner Robins, Twiggs County, Monroe County, and Crawford County,” Miller said.
