UK: Disused London park turned into popular allotments as 13 plots snapped up within 2 hours on ‘Airbnb for gardens’

A disused South London park has been turned into allotments and the plots were snapped up within two hours. The overgrown green space near London’s Borough Market in Southwark was transformed by volunteers and members of a local environmental charity before opening last month.

The overhaul was transformed into 20 raised beds across 13 plots, all available to rent on the ‘Airbnb for garden space’, AllotMe. It is now available for residents to grow their own fruit and vegetables.

As soon as it was advertised, the 13 plots were snapped up within two hours. The space also has another two raised beds with benches that are for the community to use to grow herbs and salads. Produce grown in these beds will also be supplied to a local food coop.

Geni Hudson, who rents an allotment, said: “When I heard about AllotMe and the work they were doing in creating more plots in London, I knew I wanted to be involved and, seeing that I work down the road on Bermondsey street, Borough Gardens seemed like the perfect location.
