"Personally, I am hooked on aquaponics, yet I do not understand why there is not more uptake in Australia. I have found great examples in Europa and Brooklyn, USA but pretty much NIL in Victoria or in Australia. However, I would like to invite people involved in aquaponics to answer a few questions in a survey about their experience," says Birgitta Winkler, undergraduate of Environment and Society at RMIT Melbourne, Australia.
Passionate about the environment, nature, and sustainability, this bachelor came in as a natural for Birgitta, focusing on the environment and society in her current studies. The degree will add extensive knowledge to her business administration degree and 10 years of work experience in Biotech.
The research
Birgitta's research is focusing on aquaponics in urban farming models and its potential to alleviate pressure on food security in cities and save travel miles and packaging. She is also questioning if such a model would increase community spirit and potentially develop into new business models (e.g., small coops in urban spaces).
The 5-minute survey seeks to provide important information for a research project in promoting urban aquaponics in Australia, including community settings such as community gardens, eco-centers, schools, universities, and others.
