Argus Media Acquires Sustainable Agriculture Pricing Provider, Mercaris

Argus Media, a leading energy and commodity price reporting agency, has announced the acquisition of Mercaris, a top provider of sustainable agriculture prices and analytics in the United States. This move marks a significant expansion of Argus’ capabilities in the agriculture sector.

Mercaris specializes in price assessments, analytics, and forecasts for organic and non-GMO (non-genetically modified) agriculture. Its coverage includes organic corn, soybeans, soybean meal, wheat, other small grains, non-GMO corn and soybeans, and organic dairy markets. Mercaris’ price assessments for cash crops of organic soybeans and corn adhere to the IOSCO Principles for Price Reporting Agencies. They are used as the basis for physical and over-the-counter options contracts.

In addition to price assessments, Mercaris offers acreage estimates, supply/demand analysis, and facilities density mapping to a wide range of customers across the US agriculture supply chain. These customers include farmers, processors, retailers, government entities, and financial and agricultural inputs companies.

The acquisition of Mercaris is expected to accelerate the development of Argus’ agriculture pricing and analytics in the Americas and open up opportunities in biofuels and other agricultural inputs.

Adrian Binks, Argus Media chairman and chief executive, expressed his pleasure at expanding Argus’ agriculture capabilities in the Americas. He emphasized the critical role of sustainable agriculture in the global transition to net zero. Binks also noted that integrating Mercaris into Argus will enhance market transparency.

Kellee James, founder, and chief executive of Mercaris, echoed this sentiment, expressing excitement about becoming part of Argus. She believes the merger will allow them to leverage Argus’ trusted brand and global reach and scale with Mercaris’ best-in-class sustainable agriculture offering. James is confident that together, they will be able to broaden Argus’ agriculture insights within the US and internationally, enhance their existing product portfolio, better serve their customers, and accelerate product development into related markets.

The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
