Trimble, a leading technology solutions provider, has partnered with the Ohio State University to establish two advanced technology labs within the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES). The labs, slated to open in Autumn 2023 officially, are aimed at improving teaching, research, and outreach in food and agricultural engineering and construction management.
Located on Ohio State’s Columbus campus and Agricultural Technical Institute in Wooster, the Trimble Technology Labs will provide students and professionals with hands-on experience with industry-standard technology in agriculture, construction, and geospatial sectors. In response to the pressing challenges faced by the agricultural industry, such as labor shortages and skill gaps, the labs are also designed to support Ohio State Extension training programs. These programs will equip local farmers and agricultural professionals with innovative technologies to enhance productivity, boost efficiencies, and promote sustainable farming practices.
Cathann A. Kress, Ohio State vice president for Agricultural Administration and dean of CFAES, expressed pride in hosting the first Trimble technology labs centered around agriculture. She lauded the initiative as instrumental in keeping the college and its students at the forefront of technology and innovation across their disciplines.
The labs will also incorporate technologies for civil engineering and construction management training. They will feature training workstations that simulate using Trimble agriculture hardware and software, such as machine guidance and control, assisted steering, field leveling, and water management systems.
Scott Shearer, professor and chair Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, asserted that the Trimble Technology Labs would be crucial in preparing students for future technology-driven careers. He also underscored the contribution of the labs to the land-grant mission of Ohio State by providing researchers and Extension professionals with advanced geospatial tools.
Darryl Matthews, senior vice president of Trimble, highlighted the significant role of Ohio State in generating innovative research and producing top-tier graduates in agriculture and construction. He also emphasized Trimble’s commitment to supporting Ohio State’s work by providing cutting-edge technologies.
The Trimble Technology Labs represent the most substantial in-kind philanthropic investment in the history of CFAES. In recognition of Trimble’s donation, the National Agricultural Alumni Development Association (NAADA) selected Trimble to receive the Corporate Partner of the Year Award, which will be presented at the conference in June.
