Winterthur-based start-up GreenState is driving the development of urban vertical farming with a modular farm. They are now working on the hardware and software side to make vertical farming suitable for mass production and more affordable in the future. "Currently, all Vertical Farming companies are focusing on energy consumption, and growth output per growing meter," GreenState CEO Arsenije Grgur told ftmedien.ch.
Although the breakthrough of vertical farming is not yet imminent, GreenState is convinced of the concept. "I believe the technology for it already exists. The biggest problem is optimizing the technology and mass production," Grgur says. His farm is located in an old SIG industrial hall and consists of 24 container-shaped modules, which are divided into two separate growing areas. This allows different crops to be grown under their respective optimal conditions. "We have developed a Lego principle that allows us to increase or decrease the size of the farms at any time," Grgur explains.
