According to recent reports, China has committed to providing $8.1 billion in investment and finance to support various agriculture projects in Iran. The agreements were reached during Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi’s visit to Beijing, and a memorandum of understanding was signed between the two countries to formalize the investment plan.
Under the agreement, Iran will receive $3.5 billion in investment from China in fishery, mechanization, arable farming, greenhouses, and dryland farming. This significant injection of funds could help boost Iran’s agricultural productivity and support its food security goals, which have become increasingly important in recent years as the country has faced various economic and political challenges.
In addition to the $3.5 billion investment, Iran will also have access to $4.6 billion worth of Chinese resources for two major agricultural projects in the north and south of the country. This investment could help expand the country’s farm sector and improve its infrastructure, which could positively affect the broader economy. With this investment, new greenhouses and other indoor farms are expected to be installed in the upcoming months.
The implementation of these agreements is set to begin in the coming months, with preparations expected to be completed by late March and projects possibly starting as early as April. The Iranian Ministry of Agriculture has set up committees to pursue the implementation of the agriculture MoU with China, and guidelines on the agreement will be issued for private sector companies and commerce chambers in the coming weeks.
While the investment from China is undoubtedly significant, it is worth noting that the relationship between the two countries has been controversial in recent years. Some analysts have expressed concern about the strategic implications of China’s growing involvement in Iran, particularly given the country’s geostrategic position in the Middle East.
