Germany: Potager Farm plans completion of Berlin farm Q2 2023

Potager Farm, a joint venture between Greenman Group and its fund Greenman OPEN (OPEN), has started construction of its first vertical greenhouse facility in East Berlin. Potager Farm has received a total of three million euros in financing from the group and the fund.

The Vertical Farm will consist of three six-meter high growth towers with a total cultivation area of approximately 650 m² in a controlled atmosphere. It is being built by the cooling and industrial construction company Plattenhardt + Wirth, which was commissioned as a general contractor, in cooperation with Intelligent Growth Solutions (IGS) on a property of the Greenman OPEN fund in the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district. The vertical farm is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of this year.

Andonis Sarmias, Head of Facility and Construction Project Manager at Potager Farm, commented: "The building conversion is not only a great opportunity to create an efficient, future-proof, and financially sustainable greenhouse facility, it is also an important part of Greenman's sustainability strategy, which among other things, pursues the approach 'Rebuild instead of demolish'.The location in the immediate vicinity of the Biesdorf Center retail park is also a perfect example of how regional and sustainable food production can be brought into the urban environment, and food within a radius of less than one kilometer from Supermarket can be produced away."

John Wilkinson, CEO of Greenman Group, adds: "Our ESG plan is to make the Greenman OPEN fund portfolio carbon neutral by 2050. We want to achieve this through highly specialized subsidiaries or joint ventures that are part of a target-oriented overall strategy of the Greenman Group and build up the necessary know-how. We are convinced that the issue of local, sustainable food production without the use of pesticides is a key future issue for the food industry and food retail."
