Canada: 1894 Bylaw Outlaws Weeds in Vancouver

Offenders charged $100, forfeit property or go to jail for 2 months

By-law No. 209 made into law just 8 years after the City was founded in 1886.

Excerpts:

… any land on which weeds are growing shall be pulled up, cut down, or otherwise destroyed … all such weeds before they shall have gone to seed or come to flower.

Fine: … “persons guilty of an infraction … pay.. $100”

Not paid: … “sale of the offender’s goods and shattels”

Jail. If not enough money received from the sale: “…commit the offender to the common gaol, or any lock-up house in the City of Vancouver for any period not exceeding two months.”
