Antonio Querido, the Country Director of the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) has asked government to always make proper design and planning for cities and developing areas if they are to realize the greening agenda.

Querido says that for cities to become much greener, more resilient and regenerative, there is need to rethink the way urban and peri-urban areas are designed and managed.

“With only eight years left to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, we need a fundamental change of mindset and re-modelling our business approaches. Today cities consume almost 80 percent of the total energy produced in the world. They are responsible for 70 percent of global waste and account for about 70 percent of global energy-related greenhouse gas emissions,” he said.

Maintaining sustainable food systems and having more green spaces, including urban and peri-urban agriculture and forests, he said, are essential for making cities more resilient in dealing with the impacts of climate change and COVID-19, ensuring that health-related issues do not disrupt urban food supply and distribution.

Querido made these remarks during the Green Cities Initiative and Action Plan engagement with Cities Authorities and government representatives
