The picking effort was a collaboration between Church of the Open Door and Hope for Futures.

Open Door is one of the primary partners of the garden, along with the City of Lorain and the Library.

Abby Miller, Farm Supervisor for Hope for Futures, said there will be many more opportunities like this one.

“We are always looking for ways to make produce and this garden accessible to the community, especially those who are needier than most,” she said. “We thought we’d try a ‘pick your own’ event and see how it goes!”

Miller said she would like to hold pick-your-own events at least once a month.

“We’re just trying to get produce out to the community as efficiently as possible,” said Miller.

Hope for Futures brings agricultural expertise to the collaboration.

“We are the garden experts,” said Miller. “We installed the garden and are helping to manage it.”

Produce usually can be picked up on the inside of both Library branches by the front desk, said Miller.

“I’ve been taking the produce in the library pretty regularly,” she said. “Then it is just handed out to people who are interested.”
