A research fellow who is eager to explore vertical farming solutions in urban settings. You will work at the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS) and, more specifically, the Climate Resilient Cities program in which the Horticulture and Product Physiology group of Wageningen University is involved. The work will be done in close co-operation with urban asset managers, businesses, NGO’s and citizens. The main research question is how to design and implement sustainable food production by vertical farming (high-tech indoor farming) in urban areas.

This involves:

Setting up Living Labs to investigate the benefits of vertical farming in real life experiments;
Research on two key questions: (1) How can we use nutrients in waste streams of the city for fertilization of crops in a vertical farm. (2) Production of green electricity is highly variable. How can plants in a vertical farm deal with variable electricity use for lighting.

Developing future research directions related to these topics and co-operating in writing research proposals that fit in the Climate Resilience Program, including the exploration of a large interdisciplinary AMS flagship project;

Teaching and supervising students in AMS Master ‘Metropolitan Analysis, Design and Engineering’ and Wageningen University’s Bachelor and Master Programmes in plant sciences with focus on vertical farming

You will be working in a highly innovative working environment with a team of adaptive and creative professionals that are ambitious to bridge the gap between science and society. The work will, if COVID-19 situation allows, mainly take place at AMS Institute (3-4 days a week), located in the heart of the city of Amsterdam at the Marineterrein innovation district (1-2 days a week).

The work can be organized in such a way that you may obtain a PhD degree at Wageningen University, based on your research and scientific findings.
